We are now able to do the DBS checks for those that want them / have been waiting for one. DBS is the latest incarnation of CRB by the way. The regulations have changed so that the enhanced check and ‘List 99’ check can only be done by an employer so for (only) these purposes the IAEBP is your employer and  we start the application from head office as soon as you say ‘go’ and send your fee, via PayPal, to paypal@iaebp.com – or use this button

As soon as we give your email address to the checking company (CBS), you get contacted by them to fill out an application form electronically. The parts that are not self-explanatory are sections 13 and 14:

Position applied for: THIS SECTION IS NOW FILLED IN BY HEAD OFFICE – there should be nothing you can add (it’ll be read only)

The rest of it is straight-forward.

To complete the application, we have to verify your identity, usually by seeing a copy of your passport AND a utility bill showing your current address. What we need are either photocopies, sent to head office, or scans emailed to us. If you opt for the driving licence alternative, we’ll need to see the part of your driving licence with d.o.b. and issue date.

Some of you have neither passport nor driving licence. There are alternatives which are explained in the process.

Next you need to tell us whether or not you will be seeing children or vulnerable adults at your home address. This is a legal requirement – you do need to email us what your position is on this. The term ‘vulnerable’ is used here in a technical sense; it means mentally impared in obvious way, educationally sub-normal, that sort of thing – not just a bit upset. This type of vulnerability means that the client would be attending with their carer or caseworker – that’s a pretty good indicator of whom we’re talking about. If you say that you will be seeing vulnerable clients at home, please note that everyone at your address will be checked by the police. There may well be cost implications to this – we’ve not been down that road yet to find out.

With the advent of GDPR, you now need to give clear consent for your data to be used by IAEBP (as your ’employer’ and hence acting as the Data Controller here) AND to allow the transfer of the data to CBS (who have the license to do the screening) to further process as the Data Processor in this case.

So, in addition to providing a clear statement about whether you’ll be seeing vulnerable clients at home, we now also need you to give your consent for your data to be used for the DBS check by both the IAEBP and CBS.

When your check goes through we are notified that you have a clear enhanced check and YOU get sent the certificate direct from the checking company.

The cost, if there are no complications, is £81 in total and the check is good for five years. I’m asking you to pay the £81 by PayPal at the beginning of the process.

But there’s more – at least in theory.

We have to offer you a further choice and register you if you want to join the ‘updating service’ where you pay an on-going fee and stay permanently updated. The cheapest available option of this that works for us is £13 + (£5+vat) = £16 per year = £80 over five years. But this also involves us having to pay the invoice each year for you and then getting you to reimburse us each time. So, yes, it would be more complicated but it would mean your DBS check was continuously (quarterly at any rate) up to date.

Frankly, though that sounds good on the face of it, it is also much too likely to be messy and involve more work and cost, so it makes more sense to us to leave it as a 5-yearly check. We’re happy with a five-yearly check anyway.

Please email us with your request for your DBS check and, at the same time, tell us whether or not you will be seeing children or vulnerable adults at your home address (see above) and we now also need you to give your consent for your data to be used for the DBS check by both the IAEBP and CBS.

Thank you
